Chapter 1- The Brother Not Wanted: What of David Stein?

‘She, my mother, looked at me, and she was smiling. “Yes, David, you’ll have a little brother and we plan to name him Franken!” I moaned and fell on the ground, because which child wants a brother? She only laughed and-‘

“You didn’t want a brother?” said my interrogator.

“Well, it can-“

“How would you describe your mother?”

“My mother? Well she is everything the word mother canotates. She-“

“Why was he named Franken?”

“Well, our m-“

“Nevermind, back to the first questi-“

“OH FOR GOD’S SAKE! Can I finish ONE damned answer?! What about my brother anyway!?” I yelled. It had been a phone call. Anyone close to Franken in any way was being interrogated this week. What the hell did my brother get himself into?

The man took a deep breath. He was a man in his fifties, maybe even sixties- or maybe the “sixties” part is just because I have a distaste to him? His name tag read clearly ‘Soichiro Yagami’. “I’m very sorry sir. I’ll try to hold back on the questions for now. Anyway, what about we start from the beginning? When was the last time you spoke to him?”

I took in a deep breath for patience. “Over twenty years ago. All I know is that when he was 14, he was sent off to the DWMA. I’ve never heard of him since then. Well, until now.”

The man nodded. “What is the DWMA and why did he enter?”

I scoffed beneath a breath. “Death Weapon and Meister Academy. Some sort of school for people to like fight “for the sake of the world” and people turning into weapons and other irrelevant and probably fake stuff. I detested it, but Franken decided to enter. It’s somewhere in Nevada and it’s a boarding school. I don’t know why Franken entered, he was pretty closed up about it.”

“Why didn’t you enter?”

“Not my thing.” I shrugged. “I think it’s all a joke. Some crap about Kishin Eggs and Witches and Weapons and fighting and stuff. I’m David Stein, it’s kind of a given that that’s not my thing. The world is better off since I hadn’t entered.”

“Why is your being ‘David Stein’ make it ‘not your thing’?”

The other young cop, or detective or whatever, perked up. “CHIEF YAGAMI ARE YOU KIDDING? It’s David Stein! Has one of the highest IQ’s ever recorded and is the third richest man in the WORLD! He made the cure for nearly every brain disease that is a medical issue! He is the CEO of Ne-“

“MATSUDA! I know who this man is! I just need to hear Mr. Stein say it himself along with some information on the DWMA!” he barked. The other young man slumped over.

“Well, you heard it yourself.” I said. “Do I really seem like the kind of guy out there fighting Kishin Eggs and Witches and all of those other things that probably don’t exist?” I paused “What did my brother do?”

“You’re dismissed.” Said the man.

“What? I don’t even know what’s going on and I’m suddenly ‘dismissed’. Aren’t interrogations supposed to be longer? There’s not a lot you can do with that information. I need to know what the hell is it that Franken did!” It didn’t matter what I said. The people walked out of the room and I just stopped asking. Now I needed to wait for them to walk me out.

A sudden scent caught me by surprise. A woman. I took a deeper breath. Why was I cursed with this ability? Her name was Marie Mjolnir. She was worried and nervous. Bonus, she was a weapon. ‘What’s going on? What’s the interrogation for? Why me? What are they going to ask me? And who’s the man in that room? My interrogator? I need to go to Patchwork Lab, make sure S-‘

She walked into the room and just like that, my connection with her ended.

The young man asked me stand up and told me that I had permission to leave on my own. He didn’t mention my name and I found that odd. Didn’t matter, I was given permission to get out of here. I kept my gaze on the floor but I saw her nonetheless, she wore a long black and yellow dress and from the bit that I saw, I could tell she was a beautiful woman.

I need to get out of here before I go nuts.

What had Franken done this time? Where was he anyway? It suddenly weighed heavily on me, how I, his older brother, had technically abandoned him for over twenty years…

‘I watched as he climbed into the car. He looked like he was twelve and had just been dragged out of a psych ward. I probably would not see him in a long time. Maybe that was a good thing. Franken was always a heartache on our family.

“Good Riddance!” I joked.

He smiled at me and his eyes held part of that crazy glare. “Good Riddance to you too.” He said’

Who would’ve known that that would be the last time we spoke in twenty years.

“How’d it go? What did they call you for?” It was, Helen, my wife.

I sighed. “It was about my brother…”

She furrowed her brows. “Frank?”

“Franken. A reference to Frankenstein.” See how I never mention him? “Just some questions. How about we pick up the kids and go to dinner tonight?”

“And then you’ll tell me what happened?”

I smiled. “Yeah. And I’ll go back to police department tomorrow. See what the hell my brother got himself into.” And maybe end up bailing him out… If I can, and if I want to.
